The 12000 holds about 550 yards (maybe more) of 30 pound test fireline. This capacity is needed when I catch a monster shark or game fish - they love to run!
I use my reel in the surf at Seabrook Island, South Carolina (A private island that offers great surf fishing -- you can rent an ocean front villa for a great price!) It gets splashed with the salt water, and keeps on going! I always use the baitrunner feature.
I did own a Van Staal for a few months, I traded up for the Thunnus, and saved a bunch of money in the process. I also own a Thunnus 6000, and I notice that the 12000 gives me longer cast. It also seems to be a bit more smoother on the retrieve.
Towards the end of the season, my 6000 was completely summerged in the sandy surf water and the gears started to grind. For the low price of $24, Shimano... Read more
